"love is what carries you,

but shining out like gold stitches in a piece of embroidery."

Two Mays ago I babysat the three musketeers and grabbed a few pictures of them.   Since the original shoot I was married, we added a Rowdy and a TinyBaby Kless (due in a few months!), and we lost two grandparents and two siblings.  The documentation of "the passage of time" has become particularly important to me over the last 24 months.  Years feel more like school-quarters, months go by in days, days can be brief minutes... but in all that time crazy stuff happens.  Crazy stuff including growing, changing and developing.  My two best friends have been annually photographing ourselves at a local park (we're scheduling year nine!) and the pictures are important to me.  I love this new traditions with my friend's kids.

(If you haven't seen the previous shoot it's worth browsing through really quickly! It gives these pictures more punch -- even though a group of cute kids can totally stand on their own.)
 photo im_kristen_rowdy_friends15of46.jpg
The Ring-Leader // Audrey, of the Remsnyder Tribe, is the oldest.  She has had a quirky personality, clear communication skills and incredible weirdness since she was born.  She looks like her mama, and dresses like a lady... but she is a sassy, intellectual, creative bombshell.
 photo im_kristen_rowdy_friends42of46.jpg
The Big Boy // Behr is the first boy in the group, and has been the longstanding only boy in the group.  He is perfectly made with a set of sincere emotions and a vibrant imagination.  He is a sweet little dude, is curiouser than the cat, and says the funniest things.  You can't help but watch him as he pudges around, declaring announcements about all he does!  We love this young Kless.
 photo im_kristen_rowdy_friends44of46.jpg
The Terminator // Audrye's little sister Edy, also known as "Crunchy" (among other things), has the girliest-lightest-song-bird voice, with velvet brown eyes and charming curls.  And she's a beast.  She's by no means the left-out third in the group.  She holds her own and doesn't back down to a challenge.  Her beast-mode has been a defining quality of hers since birth, but it only becomes more special as her tender side comes out more and more.  In one foul swoop she can finish her (large) plate of lunch, hit Behr in the head, pat him and carefully cradle a baby doll.  Boom boom "aw."  That's Edy.
 photo im_kristen_rowdy_friends32of46.jpg
The Little Big Boy //  Rowdy Man loves his friends -- even if they don't get to play together as often as we want.  And he doesn't skip a beat.  He absolutely believes he is as old, capable and strong as they are.  He has been an early "mover" -- rolling at six weeks, crawling at five months, walking at nine months -- but his activity isn't just action.  He pays close attention to the people and environment around him.  He puts "two and two together" and picks up on things quickly.  He's a happy baby, but he's a serious one.  I love how he reminds me of his dad ;)
 photo im_kristen_rowdy_friends1of46.jpg
I hope these kids are at each other's graduations, getting drinking together after life-good-news, in and at each other's weddings, moving boxes into each other's houses, and hanging out together for many, many, many years.

There are many ways to experience love -- all different, important, and valid -- but one of my personal favorites is the love of and the love between children.  Even this morning, on the four-month anniversary of my mama's passing, I was filled with laughter and refreshment as oversaw these knuckleheads play on bed.

The Whiteside Family | Home Family Sessions

“after all," anne had said to marilla once,
"i believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those
on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens
but just those that bring simple little pleasures,
following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”
l.m. montgomery | anne of avonlea
 photo im_kristen_oklahoma_city_goodnightnora_10of42.jpg
The story of her life is charmed, relatable and yet entirely dreamy.  Anne of Avonlea has had a handsome way with words for years.  "...like pearls slipping off a string..."  The best part of her simile is the reality of a broken necklace.  Most women, no doubt, would moan and clench if their real pearl necklace snapped and the beads strolled off one by one.  There's the profundity: life rips apart sometimes, lots of times, but look!  Isn't it neat how the pearls slide off the string?  Simple pleasures,  small instances,  a crocus crown working to stand tall in the snow.
And, so, here are the simple pleasures that can perhaps be missed in the breaking, the moaning, the frustrating.   The financial issues, the church issues, the relationship issues, the health issues, the house issues, the greater-world issues.  Here is a home, a family, a house and some of their best pearls.  Meet  steel-eyed Nora, and her copper hair.  She's the little lass of the household.  Her mama, Ashley, is an interior designer -- making the world around her beautiful is her speciality.  Nora's pops is a pastor and all-around good, kind man.

Currently this sweet family of three have friends living with them.   These friends are doing coffee-shop ministry.  They have given their life to creating comfortable, inviting spaces made for meeting and knowing people.  And, of course, drinking coffee.  "Come in!  Welcome!  It smells good, hey?  Sit for a while.  Come back again soon: bring friends."  Their love of people, all shapes and ages, and well-made coffee aren't just for "work," either.  Little Nora looks at them like I imagine she would look at the midnight stars.  They purposefully teach her the ropes, and she takes their confidence seriously.  She has each and every step of coffee-making memorized, written on her heart.  She copy-cats these two and her infectious pride and adoration is impossible to miss.  They even do yoga together!

Okay, so the coffee was a little weak.  And the meditation and exercise benefits are a little cut short when a toddler is your teammate.  One pearl, two pearls slipping off the strand.  Simple pleasures, little stories, memories made.

Special games with daddy fill the house and murmur onto the front porch.  Story time is where imaginations, vocabulary and life-skills begin to engage; where they sprout so green and bright.  Nora is an old-soul, with a watchful mind.  She examines the people around her, and watches -- learns! -- what they do.  She is her father's need to learn; her mother's need for order and systemic beauty.  She wanders off along, and also nuzzles and laughs until she can't breathe.

That day has passed, those pearls have fallen, the problems of the morning are gone now, and the joys of the evening are another piece in the jewelry box; the beautiful, shining, display case of a family and their life lived in the nicest, sweetest days.  Thank you for welcoming me into your home and hearts, Whitefield family!  I'll be sure to be back again.

“she pictured to herself how this same little sister of hers would, after time,
 be herself a grown woman...

and find a pleasure in all their simple joys."

“this is what youth must figure out:

By now you all surely must know Audrey, Edith Grace and Little Behr.  Their mama's are best friends. The girls are sisters.  Behr thinks Edith's legs are chicken wings, and Audrey's hair is spag-het-TI! (in an exaggerated Italian accent.)  Audrey tells stories about how Behr got into the "lotion," even though she herself has white, dried up yogurt-crust on her arms and cheeks.  These three live a mere eighth of a mile from each other.  I don't think they are going to get married to each other.  I think they're just going to be the best of friends.

Behr already has a patience for these girls that he doesn't have with anyone else.  Audrey can decorate him.  Edith can wail beside him.  Audrey can accidentally land her jump on him.  Edith can be in his way when he rolls over.  He just sits there like a sleepy lump.  Edith, on the other hand, almost gets worn out by these two.  She tunes them out, I think.  She's the voice of reason.  Audrey is the instigator and the schemer.  She reminds me of this line from E.B. White's Stuart Little: "He was quite warm from the exertion of being Chairman of the World. It had taken more running and leaping and sliding than he had imagined.”  Ah, yes, Audrey.  The little Chairman.  It's not easing being in charge of the world!

I love watching their little friendships begin.  Please don't hate each other too much when pimples, driver's ed, BO and ugly nail polish are your worlds.  Just be awkward best friends, okay guys?

"TiTi! Watch! Audrey jumpin'!"

Behr's "concerned" face is one of my favorites.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Audrey: "Baaaaby Behr kickin'! You kickin' Behr?"
Photobucket
Audrey: Deese for you Behr! Pink glasses!
Behr: [concerned face]
Edith: Oh my gosh. Calm down. And those are green glasses.
Photobucket
Behr: Okay, f'real Audrey, I'm not wearing your girlie shades. No way.
Photobucket
Audrey: Hahahaha! Behr bein' silly, TiTi!
Behr: No, I'm being concerned!

Photobucket
Audrey: It's pretty Behr! Pretty pink glasses!
Behr: "No" is no, and that's final.  It's very serious!
Photobucket
Behr: Oh dear. Auuuuuudrey. This is not good.
Edith: You two.
Photobucket
Behr: But... I... don't... want... them!
Audrey: Pretty pink glasses! For sun'n'errands! Errands Behr? At stores? And Target?
Photobucket
Behr: Hey TiTi, would you get a load of this? Wanna help a boy out?
Photobucket
Behr: No? Alright.  I'll take matters into my own hands. HALT!
Photobucket
Behr: I will dissolve your womanly wear with my super saliva!
Photobucket
Behr: Oh. This is just delicious. Mmmm. Yes.
Edith: Zzzzzz
Photobucket
One of our favorite Behr-isms is the way he rounds his legs and "clasps" his feet together.  He'll wiggle them together and then flail! and kick! and celebrate! followed by his feet "holding hands."  It's so precious.
Photobucket

"pointless play is fun."
jay heinrichs
Photobucket
I haven't been particularly subtle in declaring my "theme" this year.  Enjoy.  Play.  Fun.  Laugh. Enjoy. Yes.  It's been on my heart so strongly.  I've talked about blogging more (because quite simply! I enjoy blogging!), learning how to play again with my husband-to-be, group pinning and instagramming (because things are more enjoyable when shared) and more.

You can imagine my thrill when I picked up the newest "Spirit" magazine on my Southwest flight last week and the cover had a giant image of children with the colorful word "PLAY!"  I read the article on play twice.  The author wrote about children, kittens, companies introducing "recess" into their corporate work day and even some science. You should read it. It's very fun ;) Maybe this theme is on more hearts than just mine!

Enjoy my favorite quotes from the article and some of my favorite ladies at play :D

Katelynn, my bunk bed buddy, my stylist, my dare devil, my "all the world is a song" sister.  She's the girl who loves everyone and everyone loves.  She is a state-champion soccer player, practically straight A student, adorable sense of humor, stunning singer, a whoa-kind-of-beautiful and a little teeny bit "dumb blonde."  But don't worry, it just make her all the more fun.  I love her.  And I'm so proud of her as she finishes up her last year of highschool.

Meet Audrey.
Photobucket
24-months young, she tips the scales at barely 22 pounds.  And she likes to "go-go-go shoppiiing" and "go get stuff at Michael's" (the craft store), sing her ABC's to try to distract her mom from putting her down for a nap ("ELMOENOPEEE! DUBUE EX! WHY! ANZY!") and she always wants to help (help stir food on the stove, help my baby in my belly feel better [even though I don't have a baby in my belly], and help make your hair not be "eeeew! yuuucky!")
Photobucket
This child is extraordinary; that is, she is "unusually great." She the daughter of close friends and she lives about 60 seconds from my house.  It's a sad day when there is no Audrey around.  It just doesn't feel quite right.  Everyone thinks their kid is smart and has an above-average personality, but this ain't my kid ;) And she IS so smart. And DOES have an above average personality.

We all love her. What a blessing.  What a joy.  What happiness put into our adult lives.  She cracks us up just by walking - because it's SO cuuuute! She snuggles up on your shoulders and dives in for a bear hug where she squeezes so tight it makes your soul just dissolve.

One of our favorite Audrey-isms is how she collects and hoards little things like coins, cranberries, candy, crayons. After she leaves we'll find little stashes hidden around where she left her loot.  Often she'll try to specifically put the coins in her pockets.  Then she'll stand up and, to her dismay, the money will come bounding out of her pants holes and she drop to all fours, scrambling to gather her change back up.  Oh it's precious.

Evan + Betsy {Glen Echo Wedding}

"so i just lay back

'cause i'm in shoo-shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo-shoo
 sugar town."

Photobucket
It was a breezy, but not even slightly chilly sunny day.
And after getting stuck in a VERY creepy parking garage
(turns out I had somehow mananged to park myself in the Valet Parkers garage.
Oops!)
I was ready to see sweet Betsy on her wedding day.
Photobucket
I had only met Betsy once before her wedding,
but I was smitten with her taste from the get-go.
Especially her + Evan's desire to have a "fun, different and authentic wedding.
We want to to feel real to us as individuals and as a couple."
Sold. Signed, sealed, delivered... I'm yours ;)
Photobucket
When I got to the hotel I discovered a very nervous Betsy.
Still so sweet.
But oh-so-nervous.
Photobucket
"I'm not scared about my marriage!
Or my future!
Nothing could be better then marrying Evan.
It's just all this that makes me nervous!"
she said, as she pointed at her dress, hair and hotel room.
Photobucket
Her mom reminisced with her about her childhood,
trying to take Betsy's mind off her nerves.
"Look! You can see your summer camp right down there!"
Photobucket
They made sure she had some saltines and water for the stomach,
TV and magazines for the eyes,
and band-aids for those dang heels ;)
Photobucket
I wanted to give Betsy a little breathing room,
so I headed down a few doors to check on the boys.
Photobucket
Just a minute or so after I got to the groomsmen,
someone yelled "Hey! Evan! It's for you!
It's Betsy."
Photobucket
"Hello?
Hey... oh?
Right now?
If you want to! Yes. Sure.
Right now."

Photobucket
Betsy wanted to see him right now.
The original plan was to do a First Look at Glen Echo.
But she needed her comfort and rock.
And she needed it now.
Photobucket
The poor girl was visibly emotional.
Not sad or bothered.
Very confident, very sweet... just dying to see her man.
Photobucket
So with a few final touches...
Photobucket
... as well as tears and "you look beautiful!"'s from dad...
Photobucket
... Betsy was ready to roll.
I asked her if she wanted me to find somewhere to go in the hotel with better light,
or more character then the elevator entrance of the tenth floor.
"No, that's okay!  This is us, I guess. And this will just be the story of how it happened!
On our wedding day, I saw him in the hotel hallway!
Because I just couldn't wait!"
Photobucket
Photobucket
He: Wow.  You are a bride.
Photobucket
Her: I KNOW! Can you believe it?
Photobucket
Her: But it's the same.
I'm a bride.
And you're a groom.
But it's the same.
We're normal, right?

Photobucket
He: Yes, we're normal. We're just the same.
Photobucket
Her: Well, I feel a LOT better! I don't know if this helped you, but I feel SO much better.
Photobucket
Apparently seeing her made the stoic-surgeon-Evan much MORE nervous,
but it was the hugest sigh of relief for Betsy.
Photobucket
Since we had the first look out of the way, there was some time to kill at Glen Echo.
Which was probably good.
Betsy got to sit in a cool, air-conditioned room and talk with her family.
And be photographed by me.
Because she is ridiculously attractive.
Photobucket
"You know what?" she laughed.
"This is all a bit ridiculous!
You go through months of planning,
and working on this event... and then it comes...
and you can't even go to the bathroom by yourself!"
Betsy had a giddy little moment of "gaining perspective" and her mom cracked up.
"You are one of us!"
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
It was rather cute.
Photobucket

Photobucket
And before we knew it, it was time for the ceremony,
at my favoritefavorite Glen Echo Park.
(Did I mention Glen Echo is my favorite?)
Photobucket
Here's a theory I have about shooting at this park:
If you get married at Glen Echo, you just have to be a fun couple.
Or at least interesting.
With fun friends and family, to boot.
Photobucket
Because what boring, lame, persnickety couple gets married at a 1920's theme park?
Photobucket
Where artists still create, dances are still held and children still play?Photobucket
None. No lame couples get married at Glen Echo.
At least that's my theory... and so far I'm 5 for 5?
Photobucket
And look! This couple was so nice!
As their guests walked up, they were offered a refreshing glass of water or lemonade.
Photobucket
Glen Echo Couple for the win!
Photobucket
The ceremony was at THE most perfect time of day.
Combined with the colors, murmur of the lively guests and the sweet emotion,
it really was perfection.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Aaaaaaaw ;)
Photobucket
After Betsy's nerves left... they were GONE.
And replaced with smile after smile after smile.
Photobucket
A little shout-out to my favorite company Apple ;) Ow ow!
Photobucket
Part of keeping their wedding "authentic" was having seven guests share a wish for the new couple.
Some were serious, some were funny,
but all were heartfelt and personal.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
(love all the groomsmen's faces in that ^ one ;) haha it was a very sweet wish.)

Eh, they're alright ;)
Photobucket

Photobucket
By the way, isn't their huppah fantastic?
But... marriage time!
Vows!
Photobucket
Rings!
Photobucket
Photobucket
Kisses!
Photobucket
And wa-la!
They're married.
She her funny, confident comforter,
and he to his spontaneous, compassionate adventurer.
Forever.
Photobucket
The guests kicked back at the beautiful cocktail hour.
Photobucket
The details were all killer.
Photobucket
(This is what every drink in Heaven tastes like... I think.)
Photobucket
Happy happy wife.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Wonderful wonderful drink.
Photobucket
I ADORED that they had lots of kids in and at their wedding.
I've always wanted to do the same,
and these little people were just SUCH a hoot!
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Evan and Betsy first met in college.
They were friends.
That was about it.
I mean, don't get me wrong... they were good friends!
Great friends, even!
But not in "that" sort of way.
Photobucket
Betsy's maid of honor explained it well:
"He was the kind of friend you confide in,
trust everything with,
and the kind of friend if you ever let yourself admit it
might be more then just a friend."
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
It took them both a while to admit it, I guess.
They were the kind of friends that made a pact with each other
"If we aren't married by _____ age, we'll marry each other."
Photobucket
Photobucket
But all of a sudden everything changed.
Photobucket
Evan realized there was more to this beautiful girl.
"I love that you really think."
He loved how she enjoyed cooking and chilling on the beach,
but could also rough it on trips all over the world and make it fun.
She was compassionate and truly dear to him.
Photobucket
Betsy realized just was wonderful Evan was with people,
how he made them feel comfortable and instantly like a friend.
She loved his loyalty and confidence,
humor and smarts.
Photobucket
And before you know it,
Evan was in an OldTime Photobooth proposing to his best friend,
Betsy.
Photobucket
Photobucket
One thing I loved about them as a couple was how they really "stuck to their guns."
Their wedding was exactly what they wanted it to be.
Photobucket
So very fun.
So very special.
So very "them."
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
And that is how they are with each other.
Photobucket
There is definitley a sense of "take me as I am,
all my faults and failures,
strengths and accomplishments.
We're in this together and I love you for you."
Photobucket
(Haha this made me laugh. Starts young... ;)
Photobucket
The maid of honor gave on of the best toasts I've ever heard.
The room was in tears.
The best man gave one of the funniest toasts I've ever heard.
The room was roaring.
Photobucket
And they all celebrated.
Celebrated where they had come from,
celebrated this very moment of this very day,
and celebrated what was to come for Evan and Betsy.
Photobucket
I'd toast to that, too ;)
Congratulations newlyweds!
Enjoy living in sunny CA and tell it "hello!" for me!

Jason + Alison {Trummers on Main Wedding}

And my love is my whole being,
And I've shared what I could
noah and the whale | give a little love
Photobucket

Their initial client meeting was one of my favorites ever.
I metro-ed down to DC to meet Alison and Jason at a coffee shop.
There I met out-going, sarcastic groom-to-be and poised, kind bride-to-be.
"Our number one priority is the food - no offense! - but it just is."
Photobucket
I knew I loved them right then :D
Photobucket
I also knew I loved them when I found out she worked out a running-store,
and he worked at a bicycle shop for hardcore cyclists.
I support athlete-ness.
I also support BCBG wedding gowns.
Photobucket
These two actually met at Alison's work.
I love how Jason explains it :D
Photobucket
"From the beginning Alison was more of a challenge than anything.
I only knew two things about her.
One, she was by far the cutest employee working in the running store
adjacent to the bicycle shop I manage,
and two, she snubbed me."
Photobucket"Every time she worked I would try to strike up a conversation with her.
Occasional eye contact was the best I could coax out of her.
She rarely looked at me, and never answered anything I asked.

After about six months of constant pestering,
and after about 1500 offers to cook her dinner,
I told her right to her face "I GIVE UP!"

Instead of sticking to my own words,
a couple weeks later I tried one more time.
To my disbelief she actually said yes!
Since the night of our first date, my life has not been the same."
Photobucket
Gotta love it when a guy is persistent.
An excellent quality, I must say.

And look at the perks it had for Jason!
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
He's downright sitting on stairs kissing that little cute lady from the running store.
Shoooooo!
That's just great :D
Photobucket
I have to stop right here and tell you probably my most embarrassing moment in, well, in a long time.
See Jason's fantastic boutonniere?
See how nicely and properly pinned it is?
See how happy and healthy Jason is?
It's important to note all these things.
Because I pinned Jason's flower on.
As I started attaching it he flinched and yelled
"AH. You're pricking me!"

Oh funny funny.
One of my favorite things about Jason + Alison is there witty, sarcastic sense of humor.
But that's the oldest one in the book.
EVERY groomsmen uses that line.
Photobucket
I laughed and told him to "shut his face" and keep pushing the pin in harder.
"Kristen, seriously, you are really poking me."
He jerked back and checked his shirt for blood.
I evaporated and floated to the Eastern Shore.
Seriously, I just about died I felt so horrible.
Photobucket
But he's a kind man and also athletic-tough so it all worked out just fine.
But I'm now retired from boutonniere pinning.
After a long, successful run my day is done.
If your flower lady is missing, I'm so sorry.
I simply cannot help.
Because I might stab your groom in the heart.
Photobucket
La-dee-da.
Wedding!
After the first look, the bridal party wandered the simply dreamy streets of Clifton, VA.
A little league team warmed in the background,
the ice-cream truck chimed,
and magical butterflies flitted.
It was spectacular.
Photobucket
Um. Yeah.
Good call on being persistent, Jason.
Your girl is... beautiful.
Inside and out.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Special thanks to my bestie and my second-shooter Lydia Jane!
She took this shot, as well as a handful of others in this post!Photobucket

Photobucket
After the group pictures it was time to get the wedding going!
Photobucket
Alison had lots of adoring fans ;)
Photobucket
Clifton, VA is honestly a town from a movie set.
Lydia and I walked around and decided it was a cross between Gilmore Girls and The Truman Show.
Small, cozy, historic, gossip-y, full of character and just beautiful.
Photobucket
The guests all parked their cars at the reception venue, Trummers on Main,
(more on this killer venue later)
and walked a block or so to the local park for the ceremony.
These balloons led the way.
How adorable, hey?!
Photobucket
So let's pretend you are a guest at this wedding.
You've just walked past white-pickets fences
and antique shops
and churches started be Civil War soldiers
to a green, smiling park.
Photobucket
Your first order of business is to sign the handmade and STUNNING Guest Tree.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Photobucket
After leaving a nice little note and picking the perfect "leaf" to right on,
you might take a cooling lemonade.
Photobucket

Photobucket
With lemonade in hand, you also want to grab a program...
Photobucket
... and find yourself a seat with a good view.
Photobucket
And after a little bit of waiting you might be able to peak back and see the bridal party coming down Main Street.
Photobucket
You might see the fidgety and oh-so-excited groom waiting for his cue.
Photobucket
And eventually you would definitely see the bride serenaded by birds, a string trio and gasps.
A bride who is called
"an incredibly caring person, but her character and morality are unmatched."
It is also said that
"she has nurturing qualities that you would think only seasoned mothers
would have."
Photobucket
Jason loves this kind, tender, smart, loving, loyal woman so much.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Jason himself "bends over backwards for the people he loves;
he is the kindest and most unselfish person I’ve ever known.
Jason is the only person I’ve ever known,
aside from family,
who is focused on my well being."
Photobucket
Photobucket
"He has always felt like family to me.
I think that even from the beginning,
spending time Jason has always felt like 'coming home,'
if that makes sense."
Yes.  That absolutely makes sense.
Photobucket
These two really wrote on and on about how nurturing and caring the other was.
The intimate, home-y venue.
The small guest-list and attention to detail.
The kind genuine joy.
Every part of the wedding reflected the very character qualities Jason + Alison love about each other.
Photobucket
And it was beautiful.
Photobucket
A little vow-ness,
a little ring-ness,
a little kiss-ness,
concluding with a little "mazel-tov-ness!
Photobucket
Perfect perfect perfect.
I love theeeeeem.
Photobucket
While we ran away to do a few more shots,
the guests got to enjoy some tummy-love at the cocktail hour.
Photobucket
Photobucket
But we had to run away for a bit ;)
Photobucket
Because, well, they needed some more kissing time... and stuff.
Photobucket
Since I have you... let me tell you a litttttle more about them.

"All I can really say is that I love her, more and more everyday.
Each experience is richer when she is with me,
and I can't wait to see what the next step will bring. "
Photobucket
Photobucket
"I love that he is not afraid to take risks and to really enjoy living.
I am MUCH more reserved than he is,
and he’s constantly working to loosen me up a little…
which will probably be his lifelong project!"
Photobucket
"Alison is an amazing woman, far different than anyone I have met."
Photobucket"Jason is very silly.
He’s usually trying to make me laugh by doing something ridiculous
– generally some sort of improvised song and dance number
(ask him about the 'breakfast dance' or his 'little meat pie' ballad).
He lives to make other people happy, including me, in any way he can
(not just through song and dance),
and that is truly his gift.
I am one lucky girl. "Photobucket
Photobucket
"He is completely genuine, he seeks joy out of life,
he wears his heart on his sleeve,
and he makes me feel inspired
and loved in a way that I never could have imagined possible."
Photobucket
I love that last line.
"He makes me feel inspired and loved in a way that I never could have imagined possible."
That's how every bride should feel.
As the wedding day progressed,
and as these two ran into a few little snags or issues,
it was just beyond precious to see how calming and peaceful they were for each other.
She trusted him, he trusted her.
They just wanted to get married and be together.
Period.
Photobucket
OKAY.
Trummers Time!
I fell in love with this reception.
Lydia was over shooting details for me and I found her sweaty and out of breath.
"There is SO MUCH TO SHOOT!"
PhotobucketShe was right.
Every nook and cranny was just screaming to be photographed.
And eaten ;)
PhotobucketFood is one of their all-time favorite parts of life.
He cooks like a boss,
and she chops veggies like a champ.
And they, apparently, are ruined for eating out because what they make at home is so good.
Again, I support that.
Photobucket
Oh! Quick little love-time.
Photobucket
Back to the reception.
Of perfection and wonder.
Photobucket
AND GOOD FOOD.
If anyone else is getting married here and would like to hire me...
you can pay me in Trummer's Meals ;)
I really think their dinner was a Top Five meal in my whole life.
Including grandma's holiday dinners.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Ah, remember that eye-contact that was so hard to get ;)
Loooooove it!
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
I left the wedding with glasses clinking, heels knocking, voices celebrating and lights dancing.
One of the best all-around weddings I think I've ever been to.
Photobucket
Jason and Alison, I'm gonna hold you to your dinner-date-offer ;)
I must experience this food you speak of!
And I just want to see you both again, because you truly are wonderful.
Congratulations :D

London, England + Edinburgh, Scotland {Personal}

Pictures need to do the talking today.

I'll give you some minor details to give some context.
6:30 pm on Sunday I flew to London, England to meet up with Jamie.
I arrived at 7 am Monday morning at Heathrow.
We wandered London and ate some Indian food.
By 3:00 we were at a different airport headed to Edinburgh, Scotland.
Here are some pictures thus far.
It's been too lovely for words.

Enjoy :D

After this point in the day, I let my camera take a breather.
But Jamie blogged a pretty hysterical summary of our late afternoon and evening,
memories captured via my iPhone 4.
You should check it out ;)

Tomorrow we head to St. Andrews to see more of the work of His hands,
the people He loves,
and lands He's created.
I'm too excited to even dream.

Sarah Barlow {Personal}

"We expected something,
Something better than before."
the national | start a war
PhotobucketSarah introduced me to Regina Spektor and Timbaland.
Sarah introduced me to eyebrow waxing.
Sarah intoduced me to sushi and Chipotle.
Sarah introduced me to David Jay.
Sarah introduced me to batch-editing, external lighting and sun flare.
Sarah introduced me to brand concept.
Sarah introduced me to completely loving on a stranger,
who was of no benefit to oneself.

Years ago (back when I was SEVENTEEN... weren't we cute?)
Sarah took me under her wing for a 6-week internship.
She poured herself into my time with her:
challenging my walk with the Lord,
welcoming me into her world,
teaching me about photography
and creating memories I'll never forget.

And she did it for free.
Actually, that's a lie.
She lost money on this little internship idea I had.
She not only let me stay in her room, tag along to all her events,
build my portfolio at her shoots,
but she also paid for every meal, all the gas, all the parking,
not to mention the Anthropologie apron she bought me,
and programs she gave me, and website she designed with me.

At one point as we waited in line at Panda Express for our orange chicken,
I BEGGED her to let me pay.
"Nope! Nope nope nope.
Someone did this for me when I was starting out,
so the only thing I ask is that you do this for someone else when you can."

Wow.
I never forgot that.
Her generosity, self-less-ness and complete joy in giving herself to me,
really changed something in my life.
I want to impact people the way Sarah impacted me.
Because Sarah gives of herself,
which represents our God,
who fully, generously, selflessly, joyfully gave Himself for me.

Sarah is in town for a few days, and we're gonna hit the sights + sounds of MD tonight,
but I couldn't pass the chance to brag about her, highlight her and thank her.

Love you, you funny, ridiculous, booty-licious, gangsta, Dance Queen, you ;)

Michael + Nas Color {Washington DC Engagement Photography}

"Just one look at you
And I know it's gonna be
A lovely day"
bill withers | lovely day
Photobucket
People always tell me "Kristen, when you know, you know."
And I knew.
Photobucket
I knew from the very first e-mails that I was going to love them.
I knew from the first page-load on their rockabilly wedding website.
I knew from the first photograph they e-mailed over
(a spicy and simple shot of them at the beach).
Photobucket
I knew we were a PERfect fit.
Photobucket
After meeting them at the shop Nas opened (Toucan Boutique in DC -
it's super cute. Check it out!  And buy me this coat! k, thanks!),
and hearing about Nas' fashion studies in New York City,
and Michael's work in graphics and design,
I knew I was sold.
Photobucket
Those kinds of meetings are the best + the worst.
Best because you are thrilled to have potential clients that fit with you so well.
Worst because you need to keep it cool and not blow the stinking meeting so they will become ACTUAL clients.
Photobucket
But I guess there was mutual love + happiness amongst us,
and I get to be Micahel + Nas' wedding photographer.
*haaappy yippe-i-ay dance*
Photobucket
You want details about them and their love?
I can do that.
Photobucket
They met quite a few years ago in Adams Morgan.
Nas didn't really want to go out that night
(pause: I can't tell you how many times I hear that.
"I was going to go out buuuuut I did"
and then they meet someone.
Love it.)
but her friends got her out there.
She was tired, it was late, her friends were jazzed, and by the end of the evening she was just really looking forward to her bed.
Photobucket

Then her friend spotted Michael.
But Michael spotted Nas.
Photobucket
That chance meeting late that one night ended up being "the one."
Photobucket
When it was time to pop the question,
Michael wanted to make it memorable.
This woman he loves so much,
this woman that has so inspired him,
this woman he never wants to live without -
well, this woman needed to be proposed to right!
Photobucket
Paris seemed like a great place to start.
Nas + her family were in Paris for Christmas and Michael went with.
After a late church service at Notre Dame the Scheming Boy and Inspiring Girl
parted ways from her family to be alone.
Photobucket
Michael had it all planned out.
Take the train to the Eiffel Tower,
where it was dark,
romantic,
and perfect.
Photobucket
Quickly the perfect plans were becoming... romantic-comedy-esque.
Many lines shut down late at night,
Michael + Nas were trying to go one direction,
but could only go the opposite way.
They eventually took a cab,
where the cab driver severely warned them about going to the Eiffel Tower at night.
I believe "sketchy" was the word used.
Photobucket
They went anyways, always looking for adventure.
The lights on the famous tower were all turned off.
It rose into the cloudy dark sky,
silhouetted by street lamps,
city lights,
and fog.
It was cold.
And Michael asked Nas to be his wife.
Photobucket
I'm not gonna lie,
I don't know how a girl could say no to that question in that location!
Photobucket
But Nas really loved Michael,
and wanted him to be her husband.
She loved that he was always willing to try the crazy things she suggests.
"He's a good soul."
Photobucket
And in just a few months, these two will be married!
Photobucket
They'll get to forever enjoy doing all their "art stuff" together,
and eating together (because that's a major favorite activity of theirs.
See? Told you they were meant for me.)

Photobucket
They want a fun fun fun party,
with blue suede shoes
and non-stop dancing.
Photobucket
Their wedding is going to be a celebration!
A happy memory!
And mostly just a wonderful time,
to reflect their fun, wonderful relationship.
Photobucket
I personally can.not.wait.
I mean, yes, I am very excited that they are getting married.
That's a good thing.
Photobucket
But I also just can't wait to shoot them again!!!
Photobucket
Once I start, I might not ever stop.
Photobucket
Seeeeee.
Reeeeeee.
Uuuuuuus.
Leeeeeee.
Photobucket
I like this one ;)
She was fixing his sleeves,
then just needed some arm-love.
I support that.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Yes, this was already on the blog.
But it has a special place in my heart.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
FAVORITE.
Photobucket

Photobucket
I really do believe "less is more,"
and I try to limit my blog posts to a decent number of pictures.
I know I went overboard.
But today "more is more."
Wa-la.
Photobucket
Thanks for bearing with me ;)
Hope this made you smile!
After years of waiting to shoot at this venue,
the perfect couple dropped in my lap
and I am just grinning inside + out for their upcoming "big day!"
Woo-hoo!

Any guesses on where their wedding is going to be? ;)

“Who am I, O Lord God,
that you have brought me thus far?
Because of your promise,
and according to Your own heart,
you have brought about all this greatness,
to make your servant know it."
--
2 Samuel 7

I've just been thinking a lot recently about my life.
Many of my friends are graduating college this coming spring,
about to start their careers they've so diligently worked for,
and patiently waited for.
Many are dating their boyfriends,
others are engaged to their fiancee's
and some are married to their husbands.
My friends are married.

Friends of mine are pregnant with children,
trying to be pregnant with children,
already have children.
Aren't we still children?!

Friends are talking about their masters degrees,
moving to new states (and continents!),
buying engagement rings,
buying houses,
traveling the world,
getting into medical school,
working 40-plus hours a week.

I think we grew up?
Headed into my fourth year of full-time work.
Pay my own bills.
Live in my own (rented) place.
Own my own car.
Buy my own toilet paper.
Eat dessert for breakfast if I want.
I feel like adult.
My heart feels like an adult. Like a woman.
I marvel at where God has brought me,
and I'm in awe of His heart towards me,
and I long to see what He has next for me.

"Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee."

Lead on, sweet Father, I trust you completely,
with my life and my heart.
Grow me up!

Sometimes I'm a scared little girl,
and want the safety of being young again.

Show me Your greatness in any way You choose.

I'm excited and I'm ready and I trust Your heart completely.
I'm so excited about life :D

Keara {Children Photography}

"This is the story of a girl..
I absolutely love her,
When she smiles"
nine days
Photobucket
This is a story of a girl.
A little girl named Keara, who just this past week met Belle, Rapunzel and Harry Potter.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Where did she meet them?
Well.
Harry was at her house.
Of course.
We aren't sure where she met Belle (her mom thinks she dreamt it.)
And Rapunzel was actually just out in the parking lot before the shoot.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Sometimes I wish I could get into a child's head and think what they think.
What does she really think of this big world?
Who are all these people running around?
Where does imagination and reality truly blur -
where she innocently doesn't even know the difference between the truth of my existence and a Disney Princess?
Photobucket
Keara doesn't understand that it's not polite to pull a wedgie in public.
Or that people don't usually walk around in princess dresses.
Or that you must walk on the right.
Photobucket
She unashamedly watches herself dance in the reflection.
Spinning and flicking her little partly-painted nails.
Photobucket
Keara is a little girl.
Keara is a big sister.
Photobucket
And Keara really wanted to play on the playground.
"But it's too cold outside, honey."
"Nooo! The one inside mom! The playGWound inside!"
Of course she doesn't understand that that playground is only for the children of gym members.
"Mom! It's... it's... it's a PLAYgwound!"
Photobucket
Alannah didn't really want to play on the playground.
Alannah didn't really want to lay on her belly, either.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Keara was dancing with her bear (no reflection to look at this time) but they needed a little dance break.
Photobucket
Cue "big" little brother, JJ.
Photobucket
Even though he's two years younger, he's significantly larger then her.
But don't worry.
She's still the boss.
He's the dum-de-dum sidekick.
"Now YOU be the dog!  And I'll be owner! Ok, JJ? Ok?"
"Otay."
Photobucket
He follows her lead.
Because when you are two, four year olds are great people to follow.
Photobucket
Especially if they have the dignity and honor of a princess dress.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
It's so funny how children really do grow-up and become adults.
It's "no duh" but it's still funny.
Someday she won't think a splash of water hitting her head will be SOsoSO humorous!
And she won't giggle and squeal away from it.

And she won't be afraid of going up the stairs alone.
"Pwease come with me mom?"
"No, Keara, you are fine!  Go on..."
Someday she won't sing songs about singing songs.
And she won't think getting her shoes soaking wet in the snow is nearly as much fun as it was today.

But that's just it.
Someday isn't today.
And Keara is a darling, emotional, imaginative, quick, sensitive, small little girl today.

Being with kids always helps me to enjoy today.
Because someday I won't be living alone in my own apartment.
And someday I won't be a basketball coach.
And someday I won't be able to get 6 hours of sleep on weekends and be functioning on Monday mornings.

Here's to today!

This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Anyone care to share what you enjoy "today"?

ps.
She needed to be in a few more :D

Adelyn Alivia {Baby Shoot - I'm Kristen}

"For this child I prayed,
and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to Him.
Therefore as long as [she] lives, [she] is lent to the Lord.”
I samuel 1:20
We live in a wonderful world, where joy and love are real, abundant and life-changing.
We also live in a broken world, where pain and suffering are real, and also just as life-changing.

My friend Heather has four beautiful daughters.  McKenna is a blonde-curly-headed Kindergartner, and Selah is a bouncing-wide-eyed-three year old.  The next girl is Alivia, and she is a stunningly beautiful child.  She died last year when she was five weeks old.  She was young and her life was short, but she made an impression on the world that will not be forgotten.

I love to remember her life through pictures, stories and blog-posts about her.  I love to hear my little sisters talk about someday seeing "Jesus and Grandpa and Bacca and Alivia" in heaven.  And recently I've loved remembering Alivia through her little and newest sister, Adelyn Alivia.

Adelyn was born five weeks ago, and while Heather and her husband were at the hospital, I got to play with Thing 1 and Thing 2 ;D It was so special to be there when mom, dad and baby came home.

Selah held her sister tight and told me she wanted to keep her away from bad things "like dragons."  haha

There were many kisses, smiles and "shhhhh's" while everyone got to hold Adelyn for the first time.

The next day I came back over to take some shots of Addie before she got too big on all of us!  (Maybe I also secretly wanted some baby-snuggle time.)

I'm no baby photography specialist, but I just couldn't help it.  I had to post a few pictures of this girl.  I love her so much.  I can hardly stand it.

I love how she has McKenna's nose and mouth.  I love how she has Selah's coloring and perfectly round head.  I love how she has Alivia's steely blue eyes.

And I love even more how she reminds to me praise God.  Life is always a miracle - every single baby ever born is a miracle.  But getting to meet and hold Adelyn has been such an answer to prayer.  Watching the fight, the tears and the love from her parent's has encouraged me and sharpened my faith.

This is a special baby, part of an amazing family.  I'm so blessed to know them!

"This phase is gonna fly by
So baby just hold on
It wont be like this for long"
-- darius rucker

I don't get to do shoots of babies very often, which is probably a good thing.

If I did this all the time I wouldn't be able to get any work done!  Shoots would take 3 hours.  Editing time would double.  I just can't take my eyes off babies.

A close family friend had a baby boy last week, and I was thrilled to be able to take pictures of him!
He is so soft and squishy.  I love his little groans. I love that when he gets frustrated then he rubs his face back and forth on the blanket.

I love that when his dad comes in and says his name he quiets down and his little eyes dart around, almost like saying "Wait! I know that voice!"
I love how he plays with his fingers. "Theeese are mine." I love how he kicks his little legs out awkwardly.  I love how he screams and honestly two seconds later he's fading into a dream.

Every baby truly is a miracle and it is just fascinating every time I see one.
(and here is a foot one for mom -- all mom's love their babies feet :D)

Thanks for letting me come and take pictures of your sweet boy :D

Enjoy holding him every single second that you get to - little Nathan is going to be big so fast!

Jess and Neil had their baby boy, Ryder, two weeks ago! Of course we must have pictures :D

I love this one:

But it wasn't super easy to get ;D

Jess loves his "denim blue" eyes. We're all hoping they stay that color!

Aww.guh. How can you not just want to kisssss that?

I think looks like a little gerbil in this one haha

Nyah was exceptionally eager to have her picture taken! Fine by me! Isn't she just beautiful?

What an angel, right? ;)

And a few outside:

Jess this outfit - I do too! How cute?

I love this kid hahaha

Congratulations! Enjoy the show!

Alathea and Abby!

This post is a little on the short side (hahah that was a pun). Anyways, I am leaving for the day - in about three hours - and I was determined to get this post up before I left!

Alathea and Abby are two of the cutest girls God has ever made. You may remember Alathea from last year (the post is here) and I was so excited when her mom called me again this year! Here are some favorites :D

This one is probably my favorite from the whole day :D I love her little strap falling off her shoulder, and her big baby head and her fat little legs. And don't even get me started on her hand-sucking. Babies are the best :D

And here is the show!
