Favorite "Old" Item {Contest Post #3}

A picture’s worth a thousand words
But you can’t see what those
Shades of gray keep covered
You should have seen it in color

I love old things.
I love things with character.
A story - bet you never heard that before?
Photobucket
I bought this book in a tiny bookstore in Norwich, England last summer.
"Now We Are Six" by AA Milne is just the sweetest little book and was originally published in 1927 in London.
Photobucket
I often grab it before I write blog posts and look at the pictures,
read the sweet "through child's eyes" poems
and mostly get inspired.
(look at the cute little bear butt climbing up the stairs hahah oh man I love it.)
Photobucket
It's a secret, but this will be a part of the gift basket in some way ;)

But I'll give you a hint:
This is my favorite poem in the book :D
And try not to just skip over it!
It's so so so cute!
You have to read it!

"Let's look for dragons," I said to Pooh.
"Yes, let's," said Pooh to Me
We crossed the river and found a few -
"Yes those are dragons all right," said Pooh.
"As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.
That's what they are," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what they are," said Pooh.

"Let's frighten the dragons," I said to Pooh.
"That's right," said Pooh to Me.
"I'm not afraid," I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and shouted "Shoo!
Silly old dragons!" - and off they flew.
"I wasn't afraid," said Pooh, said he,
"I'm never afraid with you."

So wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
"What would I do?" I said to Pooh,
"If it wasn't for you," and Pooh said: "True,
It isn't much fun for One, but Two
Cant stick together," says Pooh, says he.
"That's how it is," says Pooh.

Did you read it?
You better have!

SoooOooo, leave me comment and let me know what your favorite "old" thing is!
A piece of furniture in your grandma's house, a shirt you've had since middle school, whatever is "old" to you and a favorite!

Holllllller.

Favorite Current Album {Contest Post #2}

Lay your hand on my heart
Like it was at the start
That always was the best part.

best part | el madmo + norah jones

Photobucket
"...Featuring Norah Jones" isn't my all-time favorite album.  But it's my current favorite.
And it's the second item in the gift-basket!
This dandy little disc is a complilation of all Norah Jones's duets from 2001-2010.
It's smooth, chill moodiness is so perfect for this end of winter season.

And.I.Love.The.Lyrics.

I hadn't heard most of these songs before,
but there are some stunning lines written in here!

If you've been around very long, you know that my photography is based BIG-TIME on the couples personal story.  I love the story.  I love a good story.  I love a well-told story.

Like this, for example:

He was playing on the sidewalk
For passing change,
When something strange
happened.

Glory train passed through,
So he buried the coins he made
In peoples park.
And went looking for a woman
To court and spark.

It seemed like he read my mind
He saw me mistrusting him
And still acting kind.
He saw how I worried sometimes
(I worry sometimes).

"All the guilty people", he said
"They've all seen the stain -
On their daily bread
On their christian names.
I cleared myself.
I sacrificed my blues.
And you could complete me!
I'd complete you."

His eyes were the color of the sand.
And the sea.
And the more he talked to me,
The more he reached me.
But I couldn't let go of L.A.
City of the fallen angels.

Favorite Magazine {Contest Post #1}

"Oh, everyone's talking about it.
The whole kingdom.
The Grand Duke will be here any minute.
  He's been hunting all night
 for that girl.
The one who lost her slipper at the ball last night.
They say he's madly in love with her."

If you missed why this contest is happening, gooo oooover here-a!)

I like magazines.
A.lot.
I love flipping the pages so much better then scrolling through online links.
My recent most favorite magazine is Grace Ormonde's Wedding Style
(this edition came out a little while ago.)
Photobucket
This is like the fairy-tale-bed-time-story-book for grown-ups.
I'd never want a wedding like a Grace Ormonde wedding.
Psh, and who are we kidding, I could never have the OPTION of having a Grace Ormonde wedding.
But it's fun to pretend?
Because let's be honest, I wouldn't ever really want to be Cinderella.
I just liked imagining it.
Photobucket
This magazine is laid-out so well.
It's not cluttered.
It's very appealing.
And these shoes?
If any one of you buys me those teal heels right there, I will name my first-born after you.
And my estate.
Photobucket
My favorite thing to look at is the dresses.
Big pictures.
Right off the runway.
Stop my achey-breaky-heart.
Photobucket
So first item in the gift basket is Grace Ormone Wedding Style!
Leave a comment with YOUR favorite magazine (any "genre" - food, house, health, celebrity, whatever!)

"Favorite" Contest Rules!

Hey all!

Contest time.
Here's the deal-io.
Over the next two weeks I am going to have 10 separate posts about some of my favorite things, and how those things inspired parts of my website.

We good so far? Thweet.

At the end of the posts all ten of my "favorite items" that I blogged about will be put into a gift basket.
And shipped away to the Contest Winner.
To enjoy.
And be inspired.
And to... yeah, mostly enjoy.
Photobucket
How do you enter?
By leaving a comment on the blog posts with your favorite _______.
So, if my blog post is about my favorite shoe company,
you leave a comment with your favorite shoe company
and you have officially entered!

You can comment on all ten posts!
At the end, I will randomly select from the comments over the whooooole contest.

SPECIAL CATCH OF THE DAY!
(and it isn't salmon!)

If you tell a friend about this contest and they leave your name in their comment,
and then THEY win the gift-basket,
you will win a special door-prize!

So.
That was a little tricky.
Let me explain.

You are Kate.
Your friend is Lena.

You tell Lena about the contest.
Lena comments on my blog and says:
"My favorite shoe company is Steve Madden.
And Kate told me about this contest!"

Then once the contest is over, Lena wins! Not Kate.  Sad Kate :(
But no!
Kate is happy because she gets a special prize after-all!

Does that make sense?
I hope so.

First "favorite" item will be posted tomorrow!
And the contest will officially begin!

Any questions?
Ask away :D

Big Announcement! {I'm Kristen Photography}

"Hey man,
You're singing my favorite song
Hey friend,
You're bringing back better times
Hey there,
You know just what to say
Hey kid,
That's just what I needed today"

Orba Squara - My Favorite Song

Okay, okay.
Maybe it's not the biggest news of all time.
But for me it's pretty big.
And exciting.
Photobucket
New website (and new blog) is on it's way!
The big reveal will be before I fly away to Las Vegas for WPPI.

This isn't a quick slap-together, drag-and-drop into a few pre-made templates project.
I spent a LOT of time drawing, brain-storming, designing, and personalizing my site.
It's simple and not very fussy.  But I love all the details.

SO.
I think the most fun part of this whole new site is going to be explaining how it came to be.
Which is where y-o-u get involved.

My theme for my new sites isn't "wedding photography."
Or even "photography."
It's all about my favorite things.
Taking my job, wedding photography, and making it personal.

Over the next three weeks I am going to have contest.
A good one!

Tomorrow I am going to announce:
Contest Rules
How You Get Involved
aaaaaand
What You Win!

holler baller.

ps.  It involves YOUR favorite things.
pps.  I feel like Oprah.

Interns 2011

"I'm anticipating the time
When it'll be my turn,
It could be fun to try
I think that I'll save the world
As a fun afternoon activity"
brooke fraser - saving the world
Photobucket
"My" highschool has a really great "internship week" each year.
Each highschool student needs to submit a request to a business/career-option they would be interested in pursuing, and then instead of going to school that week, they go to "work" and intern!
Photobucket
This year I had (from L to R) Katie, Julia, Emily and Natalie.
Photobucket

We talked a good deal about branding, shoot preparation and "setting yourself apart."
One day we brainstormed brands.
They each picked words that described themselves.
The cut out pictures and created "brand boards" to see what they "looked" like.
Another day we worked on logos.
Another day they brainstormed for a shoot to do together.
Photobucket
The final day they came and got all ready for their little "planned" shoot.
It was pretty adorable ;)
Mostly their conversations about "girl" things that I loved to eavesdrop on.
I love highschool girls haha
Photobucket

Let me introduce them a little more specifically.
Emily is "artsy, dorky, young."
Probably the most experienced photographically-speaking of all the interns.
I loved the new look we came up for her!
Photobucket

Photobucket
Photobucket

This is Natalie.
She came up with "joyful, colorful, spunky."
I think Natalie is the most driven and most "set and achieve goal"-oriented of all the interns.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Katie is the fire-cracker.
And "spontaneous, funky, old-soul."
She's for sure the most excited and passionate in the group!
Photobucket
A little spontaneous funk...
Photobucket
... and a little old soul ;)
Photobucket
Oh Julia, Julia.
;)
Julia actually isn't as interested in photography as she is exploring options.
I think she should going into fashion styling.
For her age, I think she has incredible taste.
I loved her "brand" the best.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
OhHEY. It's me!
Photobucket
After the fun little shoot with the girls, we had two bf-gf couples to practice some more on!

It was a packed week, and I went to bed early + tired every night! But it was so worth it.
Can't wait to see where these ladies go!
You all made me laugh, made me think and made me laugh some more.
I had a blast!

Ps. Trying to decide if I should do internships again this spring/summer.
Thoughts?

Keara {Children Photography}

"This is the story of a girl..
I absolutely love her,
When she smiles"
nine days
Photobucket
This is a story of a girl.
A little girl named Keara, who just this past week met Belle, Rapunzel and Harry Potter.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Where did she meet them?
Well.
Harry was at her house.
Of course.
We aren't sure where she met Belle (her mom thinks she dreamt it.)
And Rapunzel was actually just out in the parking lot before the shoot.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Sometimes I wish I could get into a child's head and think what they think.
What does she really think of this big world?
Who are all these people running around?
Where does imagination and reality truly blur -
where she innocently doesn't even know the difference between the truth of my existence and a Disney Princess?
Photobucket
Keara doesn't understand that it's not polite to pull a wedgie in public.
Or that people don't usually walk around in princess dresses.
Or that you must walk on the right.
Photobucket
She unashamedly watches herself dance in the reflection.
Spinning and flicking her little partly-painted nails.
Photobucket
Keara is a little girl.
Keara is a big sister.
Photobucket
And Keara really wanted to play on the playground.
"But it's too cold outside, honey."
"Nooo! The one inside mom! The playGWound inside!"
Of course she doesn't understand that that playground is only for the children of gym members.
"Mom! It's... it's... it's a PLAYgwound!"
Photobucket
Alannah didn't really want to play on the playground.
Alannah didn't really want to lay on her belly, either.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Keara was dancing with her bear (no reflection to look at this time) but they needed a little dance break.
Photobucket
Cue "big" little brother, JJ.
Photobucket
Even though he's two years younger, he's significantly larger then her.
But don't worry.
She's still the boss.
He's the dum-de-dum sidekick.
"Now YOU be the dog!  And I'll be owner! Ok, JJ? Ok?"
"Otay."
Photobucket
He follows her lead.
Because when you are two, four year olds are great people to follow.
Photobucket
Especially if they have the dignity and honor of a princess dress.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
It's so funny how children really do grow-up and become adults.
It's "no duh" but it's still funny.
Someday she won't think a splash of water hitting her head will be SOsoSO humorous!
And she won't giggle and squeal away from it.
Photobucket
And she won't be afraid of going up the stairs alone.
"Pwease come with me mom?"
"No, Keara, you are fine!  Go on..."
Someday she won't sing songs about singing songs.
And she won't think getting her shoes soaking wet in the snow is nearly as much fun as it was today.

But that's just it.
Someday isn't today.
And Keara is a darling, emotional, imaginative, quick, sensitive, small little girl today.

Being with kids always helps me to enjoy today.
Because someday I won't be living alone in my own apartment.
And someday I won't be a basketball coach.
And someday I won't be able to get 6 hours of sleep on weekends and be functioning on Monday mornings.

Here's to today!

This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Anyone care to share what you enjoy "today"?

ps.
She needed to be in a few more :D

Just a little hello [Personal]

I was looking through some files yesterday for a picture.
And I found this one,
even though it's not what I was looking for.
And then Joni sang and it just seemed like it would make a happy blog post today.

"Now comes the morning
Sunshine for dreaming
I never saw a sky so free
Never so blue

Unveils a time for sharing love with you

Teach me to tell you
All the feelings I've been learning
Tell me to teach you my heart
All words seem wrong from the start
Photobucket
So I will tell with my eyes

Silence that asks and looks so wise
And needs no answer on a day like this

Come to the sunshine
Share in the quiet of knowing
No need for telling you sometimes
When all the answers are
So plainly showing"

Joni Mitchell has some very lovely poems sometimes.

Happy Wednesday!

Kyle + Ashley {Glen Echo Wedding}

"Why'd ya have to be so cute?
It's impossible to ignore you"
imogen heap - goodnight + go
Photobucket
Kyle and Ashley got married.
(Sometimes you just have to jump right in.
I always wanted to have that luxury when I wrote papers in highschool.
"Why do I have to write the lame 'Websters dictionary defines "courage" as...' introduction?
I just want to start writing.")
Photobucket
So start writing I shall.
These are bride Ashley's back-up shoes.
Yes.
BACK-UP shoes.
The simpler, more comfortable, more do-able shoes
to change into if her "real" shoes started to hurt too much.
Photobucket

Aren't the "real" ones magnificent?
Seriously.
This theory hasn't been proven, but I think it's impossible to have a bad wedding day when your shoes are these.  Just a thought.
Photobucket
Ashley not only wore amazing shoes, but she had an amazing venue: my favorite Glen Echo.
(remember these weddings? Here + here?)
Photobucket
Ashley and her sister (who we met a few weeks ago - her fiance' built her a log cabin. Remember?) dressed in the Spanish Ballroom.
Photobucket
Ai ai ai, chica!
It was beautiful in every way.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Gaaaahgaaahbagaaah.  I drool.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
I've become great friends with Ashley.
Like I mentioned in their engagement shoot post, our first "client meeting" lasted two hours.
And we mostly talked about shoes, cookies and soccer.
Photobucket
Since then I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Kyle.
They've come over to my house for dinner.
They bought me Pyrex.
They invite me over for spanish rice and tacos.
Photobucket
They've really become so much more to me then a fun couple who got married.
Photobucket
Don't get me wrong:
Photobucket
They are FUN.
And the did get married!
Photobucket
But our friendship is beyond customer-business.
We talk about life, they understand what is going on, I get their jokes and love their stories.
(ps. Love this sequence of Kyle's godmother coming in to see his mom and himself. PRESH.)
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
I also love Ashley's shoes.  Have I said that yet?
Probably.
But I beeeet you that you forgoooot already!
And now I reminded you!
I LOVE HER SHOES.
Boom.
Reminded again.
Photobucket
Birds of a feather flock together...
Photobucket
Glen Echo is the.freaking.perfect.place for fun-loving people to get married.
I always say that if you get married at Glen Echo Park it reveals what kind of person you are.
Washington DC has country clubs, congressional clubs, hotels and formal ballrooms.
So if you choose DC's ONE colorful, historic carnival grounds... well, you must be cool ;)
Photobucket
This little guy was so well behaved and VERY serious.
I was so excited to get him laughing ;)
Photobucket
Um. Hello?
Hi!
You are awesome, Glen Echo.
I know, I know.
Photobucket
One of Ashley's relatives found a picture of Ashley + Whitney in their first wedding!
I love stuff like that at weddings :D
Photobucket
Daddy + his baby girls... all grown up!
Photobucket
Ashley decided to have her parents, sister AND best friends escort her to the aisle and then she walked the little aisle part to Kyle alone.  Very unique and VERY cool!
Photobucket

Photobucket
This was when her shoes sunk into the mud.
It's ok, shoes.
I still love you.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
After the almost sinfully perfect (that makes NO sense) wedding ceremony, I got to to the husband+wifey all over for pictures!
Photobucket

Photobucket
This was one of the easiest shoots of my life.
I was thinking about it later - yes, they are fun.  But a lot of my couples are fun! (All even!)
Yes, they were gorgeous, but I have that in abundance too!
The location was amazing, but I've shot in amazing places before.
Photobucket
What was it?
Photobucket
I think the mutual trust.
I can remember specific couples - Kyle and Ashley now one of them - who just totally and excitedly trusted my eye and ideas.
Photobucket
And they also have such a relationship of trust with each other.  Mutual joy, mutual security, mutual good!
Photobucket

Photobucket
So, the moral of the story is...
Trust = THE BEST EVER.
Photobucket
But back to these two love-heads.
The more I look at their pictures they more I love Kyle and Ashley.
Photobucket
Their jokes, their nerdy cool-ness, their best-bud relationship.
Their work ethic, drive and opinions.
I love it all.
Photobucket

Photobucket
They are crazy.  Like, carrrazy.
But there is an underlying and obvious peace they have together.
It's so unforced, so natural.
Photobucket

Photobucket
I have loved every moment of meeting, talking, knowing and shooting you both.
You are so dear to me!
Photobucket

Photobucket
Alright foooolks.
Let me show off their cute, original and personal reception.
Hand-decorated pumpkins, comic-book style menu and silly straws!
Photobucket
Photobucket
And photobooth props...
Photobucket
And root beer place cards...
Photobucket
And personalized paintings from guests (see the SpiderMan?  Inside joke between Kyle and his friend! haha love it!)
Photobucket
And best of all!
PIZZA BAGELS!
Photobucket
Apparently when Ashley was a little girl she was NOT the type to dream about her wedding day.
However, she did always know she wanted one thing.
Pizza Bagels.
So her wedding coordinator surprised her and had them brought out during cocktail hour!
Photobucket
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
I have so much more I could post, but I think I need to call it a day.
A happy, in love, smiling, spinning, dancing, laughing day.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Congratulations, friends.
You deserve the best of the best and I hope the fun for you two together never ends :D

ps.  Special thanks to Paul Barrios and Jessica Shae for second-shooting in the cold with me!  You two are rockstars!

New Years Thoughts {Personal}

"you better be prepared to be surprised"
sondre lerche

I love reflecting.
I remember things very, very well and I love to remember them.
I love how songs, clothes, smells, places, faces and even words can instantly land me back in a very specific moment or time in life.
I love to remember where I was,
what I wanted,
 and then what actually happened.

It's honestly crazy to me.

Crazy how people have dreams, or goals, or even just expectations for the future.
About work.
About friendships.
About marriage.
About family.
About travel or culture or politics or art.
Photobucket
{i love you}

I think most people would be honest and say "Yes, I have an idea where I'd like to go in the future."
God bless those who are c-c-craaAazy ambitious and huge dreamers, constantly being inspired to go further, see more and set lofty and possibly even scary goals.

God bless the folks who are simple.
Their dreams are that life would continue just like it is now.

Most of us lie somewhere in between "crazyHUGEdreams" and "I want nothing to change."
But we all have things we want, and since we are humans, we usually do what we can to get what we want.
Photobucket
{only went to the beach twice this year. boo.}

Lets say, for example, I really want "A."
That's my dream: A.
(fill in the "A":
degree in American History,
new Calvin Klein dress,
 husband,
certain weight,
medical results,
part-time job,
 the perfect hair color,
 salary, Chipotle for dinner,
whatever!)
And I've figured out that in order to get A, I need to do 1, 2 and 3.

So off I set in life, headed to finish 1, so I can cross-off 2, so I can complete 3, so I can finally have A.
Photobucket
{sometime all that matters in life is fruit snacks and princess coloring books}

In between "doing what I need to do to get what I want" life unfolds.
It's like a laundry room.
Some folded, some knotted. Some clean, some dirty.
Some lovely garments, some hideous ones.
Some fresh Lavender Field smells, some shocking B.O. from a field smell.
Some wet, some hot, some damp, some not.
Welcome!
(But make sure you fold my socks the right way.)
Photobucket
{And sometimes instruction manuals just aren't that helpful and you still have to figure it out yourself.}

Life can be extravagantly more then I ever could have tried to plan or dream!
And life can rudely be much duller and heavy then I ever wanted.
"This was NOT what I had planned."
Que random European musician:
"You'd better be prepared to be surprised."
Photobucket
{And SOMEtimes, only rarely though, you will go running and come home and find a diaper by your door.}

As CS Lewis popularly describes:
"Stop…regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one's 'real' life.
The truth is that what one calls 'the interruptions' are precisely one's real life --
the very life that God is sending day by day."

This is what I learned in 2010.
Have your dreams.  Get excited about them.  Make them simple.  Or make them extraordinary!
Get emotional about them - feel for them, invest in them, look forward to them.
Have an "A."

And don't waste that vision or excitement!
Create a 1.
And then a 2.
And then a 3.
And then get ready to be surprised.
Get ready for mismatched socks,
B's instead of A's,
imperfect hair color,
tears,
and sing along to the song.
Photobucket
{Yes. I bought shoes with the Curlz font in them.
And, yes, I overused the Hipstamatic ap.  Please don't judge me.}

This is life, in all it's changing, imperfect, sudden, emotional glory.
And when the plans change,
and when you don't get what you want,
and when it's broken,
when it's full,
when it's different,
when it's new,
I've learned to get just as excited.

"Yes, the Lord will give what is good." Psalm 85:12
"The Lord of hosts has sworn 'As I have planned it, so it shall be." Isaiah 14:24
(Oh the security in those two sentences.  Blessed assurance.)
Photobucket
{I miss my sister and playing airplane with her.}

I'm learning to love not being in control.
I hate it.
But I love it.
Photobucket
I love that this past year
I went to Florida and got stuck because Maryland was blizzarding,
I got stuck on my deck three times because I have no brain (I am asking The Wizard for one, though.)
I went to Europe for the first time and was detained, finger-printed and mug-shot-ted,
that I cut my bangs wrong and they looked pre-school-y for a while there,
that I lost my favorite boot (I have one, but can't find the other!),
that I moved in all alone to an apartment and spent the night before my 21 birthday packing up my bedroom and eatin' pretzels,
that I met dozens of people who until this year I didn't even know existed and now they are part of my life in some way,
that my family lives in a completely different sunny state and I'm not with them,
that I still don't fit into my "skinny-goal jeans",
and that life didn't go at all how I planned.
Photobucket
I laughed.
I cried.
I felt little.
I felt much.
I ate. (and ate.)
I tried.
I failed.
I was loved.
Life was life.

It was harder.
But it was better!
It was the life God gave me!

I can't wait to see how I'll be surprised in 2011. I really can't :D

I shall call the pebble Dare
We will talk about walking
Dare shall be carried
"Meet your new road!"

Happy New Year!

John + Christian {Chevy Chase Marriage Photography}

"Here in these deep city lights

Girl could get lost tonight
Nothing here to hold on to

Could I hold you?"
sarah bareilles
Photobucket
Christian has friends.
John has friends.
Photobucket
They even have a few mutual friends.
Photobucket
Who apparently think they are Emma ;)
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
But the good news is that the match-making worked.
And after John's tour of the White House with a particularly great tour guide, things started rolling.
Photobucket
Hours of conversation, stupid couple-jokes, distracted work days, long distance agonies, falling in love, "I love you's", diamonds, proposals and "I do's" all followed.
Photobucket
As well as military deployment.
Photobucket
This newly married couple, who met at a Starbucks, were about to face their biggest challenge yet.
Photobucket

Photobucket
Being apart.
Photobucket
Thankfully, John made it home safe and sound, so this year they get to spend the holidays together.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Oh so together :D
Photobucket

Photobucket
Aren't they adorable? I want to be that adorable when I grow up.
Photobucket
Thanks for being amazing, for not quitting in the cold and for all the fun!
Hugs :D

Craig, Laura + Kids {Family Shoot}

you might fall down on your face
but don't be fall'n in love
as she's walkin' away
zac brown band - as she's walkin' away
Photobucket
Craig is a little on the shorter side.
And Laura is a little on the beautiful side.
Photobucket
They went to church at the same place, and Craig heard Laura's testimony.  He was kind of hooked.
But they hadn't spoken yet.
Photobucket
Photobucket
He was chilling with his friends afterwards, and she started to walk their direction.
Craig started to get mentally pumped.
"Keep it together man."
This was a big moment. His chance to introduce himself to beautiful Laura.

And in one boy-ish swoop, Craig's nearly 7-foot-tall friend, grabbed Craig by the ankles and dangled him in the air as Laura passed.
Photobucket
He now likes to joke that he was "literally head over heels" when they met ;)
Cute stuff.
Photobucket
And clearly everything worked out just darling for the young boy and the cute girl
Photobucket
Their three awesome kids are so well-behaved and did an excellent job as we ran around taking pictures.

John Wooden Love Letters

"I'm very much in love with her."
john wooden

Even though Nellie died over 20 years ago "on the 21st of EVERY month, Wooden writes Nellie a love letter. And no one gets to read the letters, not even his family."

Happy Saturday!
I'm headed out to my final wedding of the year.
And good news: they are very much in love.

Grow Up {Personal}

"so, here i am in my new apartment"
taylor swift - never grow up

Photobucket
When my little sister was in town for Thanksgiving,
she came out of the bathroom with an announcement.
"Oh Kristen, I just love your new soap!
It smells soooo gooood. Lemon Sausage is my favorite!"

Photobucket
She meant Lemon Sage.
And I laughed and laughed and I never look at this soap dispenser the same.
Lemon Sausage Hand Soap hahahaha

When they were here we decorated for Christmas
(let's be honest, decorating for Christmas alone...well, you might as well not do it.  It's just no fun.)
We went to Target to get ornaments.
I told the girls to pick out a special one for my tree.
Photobucket
Lauren picked the ugliest, already-chipped-iest, styrofoam filled ornament in that store.
Seriously.
They were some CUTE ones.
And this was $7.  I could make that 14 times over for $7.
But it was the one she loved and the one she wanted to me to have,
so it hangs on my real, $33.56 Christmas tree
that I carried in, set-up and watered with my little brother.
The tree base is propped up with a "The Care and Keeping of Home" notebook
- clearly the most I ever got out of that book ;)
Photobucket
At night before bed I fill up a nice wineglass of water.
I turn on the Christmas tree twinkle lights.
I look at the cross-eyed penguin.
I was put on my pj's,
brush my teeth
and wash my hands just to smell the smell Shannon loves so much.
"And I think to myself, what a wonderful world."

JJ + Bethany {Gaithersburg Wedding}

"'i do' are the two most famous last words
the beginning of the end,
but to lose your life for another i've heard
is a good place to begin"

andrew peterson - dancing in the minefields
Photobucket

I usually write a lot in my blog posts.
Today I'm going to keep it particularly simple, but particularly intentional.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Bethany and JJ's wedding is hard to describe with words.
Photobucket
They met at school.
Photobucket
No, not in college at a bar.
Or in highschool in the band.
Photobucket
They might at the small Christian school where they both teach.
Photobucket
Photobucket
They have been good friends for a long time.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
And after a while, JJ began to pray about marrying Bethany, his amazing friend.
They hadn't been dating, or even told each other they liked one another!
Photobucket

Photobucket
But JJ wanted to be careful with this girl. He was serious.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Pause in the story:
I'm calling these next 20 or so pictures the "Wow, the love in this place is unreal" Sequence.

Photobucket
Resume story:
Photobucket
Photobucket
JJ, Bethany and another teacher at the school took their class on a field trip.  Or rather the other teacher took the kids on a field trip and JJ + Bethany had a little date.
Photobucket

"On a scale of 1-10 how hard would it be to get you to come to dinner with me this week?"
Bethany thought it would be pretty easy.

Photobucket
Photobucket
On their first date, late this spring, JJ told Bethany one of the sweetest things I've ever heard:
Photobucket
"I have never wanted to take care of someone more then I want to take care of you."
Photobucket
Photobucket
Within months they were engaged and a few months later, they walked down in aisle in a church as husband and wife.
Photobucket
Some lyrics to the song they had played at their wedding:
"So when I lose my way, find me
When I loose love's chains, bind me"

Photobucket

Photobucket
"At the end of all my faith,
till the end of all my days
When I forget my name, remind me"

Photobucket
"We went dancing in the minefields
We went sailing in the storm"

Photobucket

Photobucket
"And it was harder than we dreamed
But I believe that's what the promise is for"

Photobucket

"So I'll walk with you in the shadowlands
Till the shadows disappear"

Photobucket

Photobucket
"Because He promised not to leave us
And His promises are true
So in the face of all this chaos, baby"
Photobucket
Photobucket
"I can dance with you"

Congratulations Bethany + JJ :D God has been oh so good.

Whitney and Nick {Baltimore Engagement}

"with these hands i'm gonna build our home
a dog in the yard for the times you ever feel alone
so if you need anything pretty lady,
go ahead and say it"

Have you ever seen "Walking on the Moon" from comedian Brian Regan?
If not, short re-cap.
He's talking about dinner parties.
He talks about the "me-monsters" who only talk about themselves.
He talks about how people have to always "up" another persons story.
So Brian wishes that he were one of the men who walked on the moon.
That'd always beat every story at a dinner party.
Photobucket
Nick has that kind of ammo when it comes to "what I did for my girl."
"Yeah, I bought her 24 roses and had them delivered to her office."
"WELL, IIiiii made her dinner and took her on a carriage ride."
"Psh, I bought her a diamond necklace that I designed."
Photobucket
Cue Nick:
"I built her a house - a log cabin in the woods.
Where we will grow old together and raise our children.
I also proposed to her there,
fireside,
as it snow fell softly in the moonlit sky.
We hand laid the tiles together."
Can't compete with that kind of story.
Photobucket
I love Nick and Whitney
Photobucket
I love how she looks at him. And how he looks at her.
Photobucket
Photobucket
I love that for two professional, hard-working, fast-paced, disciplined adults, they act more "cute-sy" and giddy then most teenagers.
Photobucket
Whitney, as a little girl, always believed in the fairy tale story.
And then she started dating.
HA.
Photobucket
NEVERMIND.
She realized it was all fluff and stuff made for movies.
She was "over" this guy thing and focused on work, school and her very bright future.
Photobucket
Untiiiillll she became bff's with her boss.
And her boss just so happened to have a single brother.
Who just so happened to find Whitney the Firecracker ridiculously cute.
Photobucket
After a BBQ at the boss-turned-friend-turned-match-maker's house, Whitney knew instantly that Nick was different. She thought he was a perfect gentleman.  She thought it was so meaningful that he would drive 30 minutes each way to do laundry with her, just so he could see her.  She thought fairy tales weren't real. But here she was falling for quite a prince.
Photobucket
"I seriously fall in love with him more and more every time he tells a joke and makes me laugh.
I know it sounds cliche' but he really knows me better then I know myself.
And he doesn't take me for granted."
Photobucket
"I can't wait to be his wife and I have never dreamed about my future so much."
Photobucket
Don't worry.  Nick had a whole lot to say about Whit. His little soccer blonde bombshell.
"She truly is the BEST thing that has ever happened to me.  I never understood those words until I met her."
Photobucket
"This may sound corny, but I honestly love everything about her.  Even when she's really mad! I just love that girl - all of her!"
Photobucket
Whitney fell hook-line-and-sinker for this sweet, proper country boy.
And he fell fast and furious for this Energizer Bunny who laughs, falls, cries and really just lives out loud.

Photobucket
You two are going to have an amazing life together - from the details you put into this shoot (like planning it around the leaf-change calendar!!!) to the details you put into your house (which is just absolutely gorgeous) to the details you put into your love.  You guys truly focus on the other person.

And together you have built an incredible life.  I'm so excited for you!

Funny Chick-Fil-A {StoryTime}

On Tuesday evening (or Wednesday morning) I went to bed at 1 am.
I woke up for the day at 4 am.
That's dumb, you say.
Why yes it is, I answer, but let me explain why I did that.
You listen.

Basically, the first 100 people in line 24 hours before a new store opens gets a free Chick-fil-a meal every week for a year (or 52 free meal coupons.)

There is a penned up area where you 100 first-liners must stay for the WHOLE 24 hours (6 am one day to 6 am the next day) before the store opens.
No running to your car, no taking a lunch break, no visiting a friend around the corner.  This is lock-down.  And every few hours they do roll call.  You line up by number, show your wrist band and get checked off for the time being.  If you miss roll call, you're out.  No soup for you.

Chick-fil-a feeds you meals, entertains you with activities + music and honestly makes a fun, memorable event for all involved.  I've been wanting to go for years (it's even on my dream list) so when this chance came up for this Arlington, VA opening, I had to do it.
Photobucket
So summer-lovin' (and my-own-bathroom-lovin') me packed up all kinds of layers, blankets, socks and my favorite silk pillow (don't judge) and joined 10 other friends for the blessed event in the chilly autumn weather.  24 hours outside, following a day where it rained non-stop, was not my favorite idea in all the world, but I knew I'd be fine.  24 hours.  That's all.  Then I could go back inside. No. Big. Deal.

The whole day was nice and easy - the 11 of us bundled in the tent and talked, sometimes we read, sometimes we played soccer or fell off skateboards.  A DJ came at night and thrilled us with group games, dance parties and a really cool microphone he wore on his head like ESPN in 1997.
Photobucket
Probably the "worst" part was the three meals of bread and breaded chicken in a row.
Yet, who can truly complain about free, hot food?
It was a bit breezy and, yes, the tent either almost flew off the ground OR collapsed in the wind a number of times.  But people teamed up to keep our little plastic dome in-tact for the night.

By 11:30 pm we were all winding down.  The party was over.  We were cold.  We were EXhausted.  We were especially porky thanks to the excess protein.  Someone was wearing a headband flashlight. It was bed time.
Photobucket
Most of our tent-dwellers had added all their layers like a human croissant, carved out a little piece of tarp property to sleep on, rolled around in the sleeping bag just right and began to fade into dreams.
My thought train chugged along tracks that created a story about me getting a hair-cut on an elephant in a sleeping back.  While I was on the elephant, it started to POUR rain.  Then the elephant starting unzipping itself (like a giant halloween costume) while I ate a lollipop.  Then real life and dream life merged.  And I was awake.

Water played outside our tent like many children on a large slide - "Oh no. It's raining." -  one person unzipped the tent door-flap, sprinted to the back of the tent, stepped on my calves and ankles and started chucking things.  Books flew past my head, back-packs hurled through the place, and girls jumped up, holding their blankets above the ground and SOMEthing was making a buzzing/clicking sound.
WHAT.THE.SNAP.IS.GOING.ON.

"My booooks! MY BOOKS!" My cell-phone sailed past me as the tent-un-zipper kept throwing things to avoid their stuff from getting wet.  A different person looked outside to see the rain.
But the sky was quiet and clear - peaceful even.

All the other tents around us were swishing with noise and filled with "aaGGH!" and murmer and "quickquickQUICK!"  Like little beating hearts in the center of the sleepy city, we all moved and quivered in colorful, staked-down confusion.  Within moments we all understood what was happening.

Sprinklers.

Freakingfreaking sprinklers.

The sprinklers attacked with water, water that - thankfully - wasn't dripping down into the tent, but it did creep in like a plague through the bottom.  It started in our toes and work up to our butts.   We all readjusted, packed in closer and curled into tight fetal positions trying to stay dry and warm.

One man outside was sleeping in his lawn chair and the sprinkler was right at his feet.  His sleeping bag acted like a giant sponge soaking in the water and he bravely fought the attack by trying to put a smaller lawn chair atop the spicket.  Sprinkler Water is a beast, though, and always shot that chair straight up, tossing it to some wet puddle beside the man.  But the man didn't move and that made us laugh.

It made us laugh that we were all hiding in fear and trembling from sprinklers.
It made us laugh that we were all filled to the brim with chicken.
It made us laugh that our adrenaline was pumping and we were wide awake at 2 am.
It made us laugh that we decided to watch America's Funniest Home Video clips on our iPhones.
It made us laugh when someone said "Seeeeeya LAter!"
It made me laugh that a stink bug was crawling through my hair.
It made us laugh that that man never did move away from the sprinkler.
Everything made us laugh.

A few hours later, at 5 am, we were screamed awake boot-camp style by a friendly but too-friendly-for-5-am Chick-fil-a employee .  Our tent popped back to life like kernels heated in an Orville Reddenbacher bag in the microwave.

"I'm sooooo tiiiiiired."
"My feet are still wet."
"You took the blanket from me last night - I was FREEZing. I woke up.  I was freezing. I was like 'why the heck am I so cold.' I looked down and I had NO BLANKET. But it's cool, I took it from you and then I was fine."
"I'm so angry right now."
"Ooooh crap, my shoes are SOAKed."
"I did not come this far - and get sprinkled on - to quit now.  I am not missing roll call."

We fussed our way to line, we shivered as they handed out new over-sized t-shirts and paper hats, we groaned when they said News Channel 7 was here to broadcast us LIVE.  But by 6:15 I had 52 free-Charlie-in-the-Chocolate-Factory-golden-Chick-fil-a-tickets.  By 7:00 I had coffee and by 8:30 I was in a warm house, with warm clothes, with no wrist-band or CHICKEN or sprinklers.
Photobucket
Dang I love a good memory.  I'd do that again in a heartbeat.

Shannon + Cindy {Glen Echo + Capital Engagement Shoot}

"you don't have to be alone,
take the road that leads you home
and i'll be waiting there for you"
peter bradley adams - for you

Photobucket
"She was dipping her french fries into her frosty --"
--"It's so good that way! I'm telling you! Shannon laughed and continued, "But yes, that's when I knew 'Dang, I love this girl.'"
Photobucket
It all started with friends.
Friends are the best, aren't they?
Photobucket
Cindy had a nurse friend who was married.  That gal's husband had a guy friend who was single.
Thanks to a bold facebook friend request on Cindy's part, some entertaining chit-chat and many, many texts Shannon and Cindy started to really click.
Photobucket
Like, seriously.
"How can you be into someone you've never even met before?! I don't know.  But all I knew was that I was totally falling for this guy."
BUT, as all good love stories should have, there is a twist.
Photobucket
(Quick side note made at the risk of sounding completely unprofessional:  They are really, really good kissers.  Just sayin.'  It's kind of magical.)
Photobucket
Ok.  The twist.
This wasn't a regular glazed donut kind of twist.
It was raspberry glazed, coconut-topped, cookie-crumb filled, chocolate donut sort of twist.
Photobucket
Shannon was moving.
Not around the corner, at that.
These love-teased North Carolinian's were about to be split by a couple states.
They had only met once (randomly at 2 am, mind you) and had texted like teenagers for weeks.
Was this completely dumb?  How the snap could this work?
Photobucket
Well, he pretty much was irresistible.
As was she.
Photobucket
And they basically just couldn't stop talking to each other.
Or sending video-messages of themselves singing to each other.
After a particularly lovely Jason Mraz video Shannon sent to Cindy (where his video camera cord didn't work, so he had to hook it up to the TV and then video-tape the TV playing it with his cell-phone to send to her.  Adorb.) he came into town.  Not to see her... but, yeah... he came back to North Carolina for a visit ;)
Photobucket
They met up late one night at a Hess gas station (very Jim + Pam, yes?).  She was in her long, goofy pajama's and he kissed her for the first time.
Photobucket
They endured the long drives every weekend to see each other and quickly fell in love.
Like, ridiculous, smitten, I-adore-you, gah, ohmyGOSH, falling in love.
Photobucket
And then Shannon moved to Iraq.
Well, his job moved him to Iraq.  Since the summer he has been overseas and has been able to come home for R&R once.
Photobucket
"When you left there was, like, weeks before I got to see your face! It was awful!"
"No, it wasn't that long...?"
"
Yes!!! I remember! I couldn't Skype you for weeks!  Oh man, I remember having that thought 'If something happened to him, I don't know what I would do.  I canNOT imagine my life without him.'  I guess that's how you are supposed to feel, huh?"
Photobucket
We did this lovely engagement shoot the day after Shannon proposed (which I was able to photograph.  Proposal pictures coming later.)  But this was the second time Cindy had been able to see him in months.  And is the last time she'll see him for another many more months.
Photobucket
They just ate these seconds together.
Photobucket
Like Cindy ate her ice cream dipped potato strings.
Photobucket
And they touched.
And they held.
And they dreamed about the future.
Photobucket
"I'm sad he won't be here for Christmas.  But if I have to spend one Christmas without him to be able to spend the rest with him, I can do that."
Photobucket

Photobucket
Photobucket
We had to do some light-chasing.  These days the light runs away pretty fast - once it goes, it's GONE.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
So we literally chased it across the mall lawn.
Photobucket
This looks way more strange that it looked in real life hahah
Photobucket
Photobucket
Sorry Cindy, had to do it ;)  I just love this one!

Yesterday I was looking through my blog for a picture.  I ran into these friends along the way.
I was re-inspired by my early brides (and I think it's funny how I often love my old pictures SO much.  Before I had a "good" camera, before I had expensive lenses, before I knew what the stink aperture was.  Funny how that happens.)

Happy Friday!

Alex and Jessica {Hollow Creek Golf Club Wedding}

"this night is flawless, don't you let it go
i'm wonderstruck,
i was enchanted to meet you."
taylor swift - enchanted
Photobucket
Middletown, Maryland got to host one of the happiest weddings a few weeks ago.
Photobucket
Miss Jessica (who is so in love with Mr. Alex, including his "gorgeous face and HUGE biceps") busied around with her favorite girls.  They painted nails, painted lips and pinned hair.  It was loud, lovely and girly.

Photobucket
And then it all stopped.
Jessica's dress was buttoned, her veil fixed and her heart full.
As she gasped looking at herself in the mirror, the room turned into delicate sniffles rescued by tissue-paper butterflies.
Photobucket
The moment was emotional bliss and made your body feel like heated cinnamon apple-cider was being poured over your heart and then somehow turned into warmed caramel as it charmed your stomach.  If that is how I felt, I can't even imagine how Jessica felt.
Photobucket
"Falling in love with Jess was the easiest thing I've ever done. And I didn't have much of a choice.
I remember the first time I spoke to her.
I was struggling to figure out how a girl that beautiful could be so down to earth and approachable."
Photobucket
"Every moment I spend with Jess I am reminded of all the reasons I fell in love with her over four years ago."
Photobucket
"All of the people that know me best realize that I have never been as happy as I have been now."
Photobucket
"I know that some people never get an opportunity to meet a person like Jess, and that makes me love her even more.  It's so special."
Photobucket
Alex, no doubt, is a wonderful man and he loves his girl.
He raves about her, his face glows when she is near.
It's just about dangtime these two got married!

Because I love these series.

... the wedding party and I ran up a hill.

Photobucket
And then I got to have that prized time with the newlyweds.
Photobucket
The deliriously happy, contagiously smiley and annoyingly attractive husband and wife, the newlyweds, the two people who are now married.  I got to be with them :D
Photobucket
Just like when a baby is born and mom's always want pictures of them "right away because they grow up so fast," I love these newborn marriage moments so much.
Photobucket
They will never get these minutes back, but they will remember them forever.
Photobucket
Jessica told me "He is the person I never knew I needed or wanted in my life.  Now I cannot imagine life without him."
Photobucket
"He gives me chills and butterflies.
I daydream about him all the time.
He's going to be the father of my children.
I love listening to him laugh.
He is so smart.
I'm honored to be his."

... remember and laugh...
Photobucket
...and dance in the arms of the one you love.
Photobucket
Alex and Jess, congratulations!  May alllll your many, big, outrageous dreams come true and when you are all settled in, I want to come see your house and have dinner ;)

Love you guys!
